This professional developer has access to both Claude Fable and to high-end local models such as Qwen 3.8 Flash Next and DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731. Given the choice, they prefer the local models even though they are less capable than Fable.
The reason is control. Fable is, in their words, too smart for most of their use cases: it writes a few thousand lines of code in one shot without them being needed, and when the program grows large enough that Fable makes a mess of the code, they have to start over. A slightly less autonomous model lets them throw challenging research and third-party library debugging at it while staying involved in the process themselves.
